Executive roles

  • ACL Special Interest Group on Turkic Languages

I am the founding president of the ACL Special Interest Group on Turkic Languages which aims to promote natural language processing research in Turkic languages, a family of 35 languages spoken by 200 million people across Eurosia. With their complex agglutinative morphology and varying lexicon and adopted script across a wide range of geography, Turkic languages present a unique and challenging case for evaluating and improving language modeling solutions. This year we've organized the 1st ACL Workshop on Natural Language Processing in Turkic Languages, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand.

  • The Workshop on Multilingual Representation Learning (MRL)

I am the co-founder and program chair of the Workshop on Multilingual Representation Learning, which has been co-located with EMNLP since 2021. Multilingual representation learning methods have recently been found to be useful in building models that can perform many natural language processing tasks for multiple languages, however, there are many aspects remaining for further research and improvement for extending their applicability in various contexts, including different downstream tasks and low-resourced language families. The workshop aims to foster a large-scale research community and promote research on multilinguality for improving low-resourced natural language processing.
